Unfortunately, my sweet Bandit fought Mast Cell Tumors – a form of cancer – for 9 months, so I’m all too familiar with canine cancer. His cancer was terminal so his treatments were to attempt to extend his life, not to cure him. He lost his battle on February 28, 2009. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford his treatments, however, many, many people cannot afford the expense and their dogs do not get the chance to be saved or spend extra quality time with their families.

My Dakota is a 9 year old Shepherd/Chow with a heart & soul of a 9 month old puppy. Dakota came to me when he was 2 months old and we have been inseparable since. He’s always been strong and in good health, we hike, we take long walks, he goes to dog parks, dog beaches, day care and even has play days along with his sister. Back in June of this year, I took him to the holistic vet for acupuncture, he had been limping a little; he was checked thoroughly and had no signs of anything. Two weeks later he was due for his annual check-up so I took him to the regular vet for his blood work and all, a mast cell tumor was discovered, after tests and being seen by the oncologist it was confirmed that it was a grade 3 tumor in his lymph node. Never did I imagine that my healthy best friend would have cancer. He had surgery and the recommendation of the vet and the oncologist was chemotherapy. We have started chemo and he is responding well and thanks to Canine cancer Awareness who is helping us, my Dakota has a chance to extend his life. He has given me the best years of his life, so much happiness and I have learned so much from both my dogs and want to give him something more: extending his life.

UPDATE 7-12-2011—

That’s what I named him when I adopted my Maltese Presley when he was just 2 years old in 2004. His previous owner had had a baby and Presley was beginning to play too rough with the baby as he was crawling. Once Presley came home he was such an energetic guy I decided to train him in agility. He has been competing now for 6 years, including at a national event. On June 4, 2011 I was brushing him out before a bath and felt an asymmetry in his rib cage. I looked, and could see a barely perceptible difference on his left side compared to his right side. Of course it was a Saturday, but I called my vet and took him in. They were stunned I could see such a slight change in contour. She did an x-ray and saw nothing of note. She aspirated the bulge and came back with a bad result. The aspirate showed some cancerous mast cells. I was devastated and confused. He had no signs of illness. So the following Tuesday Presley had surgery. I was able to be in the surgery and saw the huge tumor that was removed. It was actually under the diaphragm. It was about the size of a golf ball, very red and angry looking. I knew it looked more malignant than benign. It was not in an organ, but just attached to the wall of the abdomen and the tip of the sternum. A biopsy was taken and sent out. A few days later it was confirmed: mast cell tumor. We were then referred to a specialty vet for ultrasound. The ultrasound showed no other tumors in the abdomen. They also did aspirates of the spleen and liver. When the results came back, he was diagnosed with a grade III mast cell tumor with probable liver involvement. They said it was likely the cells in the liver were few in number, so chemotherapy was advised. We started the chemotherapy on July 11, 2011.

I am unemployed and have little savings. I was not sure how I would take care of Presley’s expenses. But I did not want him to suffer because I had no resources. I searched the internet and was lucky to find the Canine Cancer Awareness information.

I applied for the grant from Canine Cancer Awareness and was so lucky and blessed to receive a grant. I don’t know how I would have started chemo without it. Presley is a fit and otherwise healthy 9 year old. He plays hard and competes in agility. I am hopeful that he will get through this and be able to have a happy life for many more years. Presley is the joy and happiness in my life. I am so thankful for the help!

Thank you for caring and for your support, donors! Presley and I would be lost without you!

Lady is our 3 year old cocker spaniel. When we first saw her, she was hiding under a chair, while her brother ate her lunch. When she was offered to us, we were so excited to bring her home.

She was always nervous when it came time to eat, as she thought someone else might take it. Thank goodness after about a year, she became comfortable eating.

Lady looks just like “lady” in the “Lady and the Tramp” movie. She is just as sweet and charming as any dog can be.

When we noticed the lump on her side, we never thought it could be serious. When the vet said it was cancer and that she had never seen a lump so big, we became worried. I looked up cancer hospitals near Sacramento and found the UC Davis Center. They were so wonderful to see Lady right away.

We were worried during surgery, but they confirmed that the lump did not spread and that they got the margins they were looking for.

She was so happy to come home and we just got her stitches removed today. She is back to new. We are so very thankful to Canine Cancer Awareness for being there for us and Lady.

Thank You for your kind donation and your quick answer. You saved Lady’s life.

Puggy is my 9 1/2 year-old, black, male pug. Recently, he was diagnosed with cancer. He had a mast tumor on his back. At first I was very confused about what action to take next, but my vet assured me that surgery to remove it and send it to the lab was the best option. The results from the surgery will tell me what stage of cancer he has. There are 3 stages. My vet said that she has only seen one pug with a stage 3 cancer. I asked for help from Canine Cancer Awareness. To my surprise, I was granted enough funds to pay for his surgery! So, I decided to go through with the vet’s advice. During and after the surgery, he was such a good boy. He was so strong and he came home with me the very next day. He was so hyper that it seemed like he didn’t go through it at all. I am trying to keep him from jumping on the couch, but he is so stubborn and so determined to be back to his old self again.

If it weren’t for C.C.A., I would have had to save money for a long time and the longer I waited, the more the cancer cells could have spread throughout his body. I do not want to lose him. I feel like he has a long life ahead of him. Millions of thanks for the help from C.C.A. No one has ever cared for my pet and I as much as C.C.A. I am truly blessed. One day I hope to be able to give back to C.C.A. I now feel it is so necessary to help pets who have a chance of living through problems and who deserve a better life. My two pugs are so very precious to me. They are my babies and I love them dearly.

Thanks again, C.C.A. You helped change my life and my perspective on helping people when I can do so. I will keep all the pets you care for in my prayers and I wish C.C.A. a very Happy New Year!!

Roxy’s Story

UPDATE 12-20-2009—

I adopted Roxy from my local Animal Control shelter when she was 5 months old. She was the last one left of her litter; the others had all been adopted at 2 months old. She had just had eye surgery to eliminate her reoccurring cherry eye infections; her right eye was stitched shut with hot pink stitches while she was healing. She was malnourished and looked so sad with only one eye to use, but she had so much personality that I could not stop thinking about her. I went back to visit her several times over the next few weeks, finally deciding that she needed to come home with me. Her eye healed from the cherry eye removal, but had many more issues come about over the next year. She had a half-dozen more eye surgeries and even had to have a broken leg repaired (from a tumble with a Great Dane at the dog park). Roxy spent so much time at the vet that year, she has loved to go to the vet ever since. She lives to play fetch with a tennis ball or Frisbee and she is the fastest dog at the park. Like many other dogs, she loves car rides and going to the beach to swim and play fetch in the water. She thinks that my bed is actually hers; if I ask her to “Go lie down,” she will go upstairs and go straight to my bed.

This past summer, I noticed a small pink lump in between two of her toes. It was about the size of a large bug bite; and would come and go every few days. It then quickly grew to the size of a grape. Her vet recommended that we that we test it. He determined that it was a mast cell tumor. Because of its location, he was unwilling to perform the surgery to remove it and referred us to the University of Florida vet school. She had the tumor and two toes removed from her front left paw as well as her lymph nodes in her left shoulder, this past September. She has quickly recovered from the surgery, remaining the fastest dog fetching at the park. She is currently being treated with Palladia to eliminate the rest of the cancerous cells that had spread in her body. The tumor on her paw has not returned. Palladia has been the saving grace for Roxy. It is like she came back to life when she began this treatment plan. Her energy had been down all summer with the cancer, but now she is like a playful pup again.

This Christmas will be Roxy’s 6th birthday. Some people tell me that I have already done more that what most would do for a pet. But to me, Roxy is a part of my family. She is far too young to let her be taken by disease. I have spent every spare cent I that my daughter and I have, on Roxy’s care. But as a college student that survives on financial aid, I cannot continue to sacrifice our money for bills to pay for Roxy’s medication and treatment. I have recently picked up a second part time job to help make ends meet, but it is not enough to provide for what Roxy needs to stay with us. Her doctors do not know how long she will need the Palladia, or if that will be the only treatment option she will need. Her future has become dependent upon the generosity of the organizations and the individuals who understand how much an animal can mean to a family.

— Lauren, Chloe and Roxy

Born Oct 2003, had to be put down Aug 28th 2009.
Had a Mastcell Tumor, was doing very well on Chemo and then all of a sudden it stopped working and grew to a huge size to were she was in pain. the tumor was located on her stomach. Lucy was a registered Great Pyraneese. she was a gentle giant with a big heart full pf love and big paws to match. Loved spending time with her friends Tia, Macy, Daisy, and Melvin. she thought that she was the size of a poodle and could just crawl in the recliner with you at any given time. she loved ice cream and also shared my dads nachos with him…or anything he was eating. she was queen of the coach and loved naps, we could tell this by the loud snores coming from the living room. lucy would travel to the University of Missouri in columbia once a week for treatments. she was a fighter right up untill her final day. Lucy will forever be in our hearts and i will still miss my Goose standing over me wile i sleep drooling on me until i woke up. We all Love you and miss you very much Lucy Goose.
Love,
Donald, Keli, and Jordin
along with the whole gang
